American Red Cross Learn to Swim Classes

- Min/Max: 6/10 per class
Level 1: INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS
There are no prerequisites for this course. The objective of Level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Level 1 participants learn to: enter and exit the water safely, submerge mouth, nose and eyes, exhale and open eyes under-water, roll over from front to back and back to front with support, explore floating on front and back with support, explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support and use of life jacket.
Level 2: FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS
Student must have passed or show competency in Level 1 skills. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Level 2 participants learn to: Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, exit water safely using ladder or side, submerge entire head, blow bubbles (bobbing), open eyes underwater, float on front and back, front and back glides, change directions, roll over from front to back and back to front, tread water, and swim on front, back and side using combined arm and leg actions.
Level 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Student must have passed or shown competency in Level 2 skills. Level 3 participants learn to: Jump into deep water, dive in, bob with the head fully submerged, rotary breathing, front and back glides, float on front and back in deep water, change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back, front and back crawl, and butterfly-kick and body motion.
Level 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT
Student must have passed or shown competency in Level 3 skills. The objective of level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills. Level 4 participants learn to: Perform standing dive, swim underwater, feet-first surface dive, open turns on front and back treading water, front and back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly and elementary backstroke.
Level 5: STROKE REFINEMENT
Student must have passed or shown competency in Level 4 skills. The objective of level 5 is to provide further coordination and refinement of strokes. Level 5 participants learn to perform the following: Standing shallow dive, tuck and pike surface dives, front and back flip turns, front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and survival swimming.
Level 6: SWIMMING AND SKILL PROFICIENCY
Student must have passed or shown competency in Level 5 skills. The objective of level 6 is to refine the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options that focus on preparing students with a variety of activities.

Swimming and Diving Information
Preschool Aquatics Levels 1-3
This class is designed to teach fundamental water safety and aquatic skills.
- Age: 3½ – 5 years
- Min/Max: 4/6 per class
Preschool Aquatics Level 1-Helps participants feel comfortable in the water and begin to develop fundamental skills such as breath control.
Preschool Aquatics Level 2-Builds on Level 1 skills and gives the participant success with fundamental skills such as floating and basic locomotion.
Preschool Aquatics Level 3-Builds on Level 2 skills and improves the participant’s coordination of simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions.
The purpose of this class is to help develop swimming readiness by leading parents and their children in water exploration activities with the objective of having fun and becoming comfortable in, on and around water.

Parent/Child Level 1 – This class is for those children who have no experience in, on or around the water.
Parent/Child Level 2 – This class is for those children who have some experience in the water and are demonstrating skills of going underwater.
Springboard Diving Lessons
- Min/Max: 6/10 per class
Open to all swimmers interested in learning more about diving. This includes the basic approach, forward dive, back press and a number of other dives. Participants will be instructed according to individual ability levels.
